Paper Abstract:
Compares and contrasts two cases. The Holocaust of the Nazi regime, and the Stalinist purge in the USSR. Compares extreme form of fascism under Hitler, and extreme form of Bolshevism under Stalin. Similar objectives of both leaders to redraw the map of Europe. Contends the political extremism of both countries resulted from the personalities of Hitler and Stalin.

Paper Introduction:
This research compares and contrasts two cases of state-sponsored mass murder in the 20th century: the Holocaust, which refers to the state-sponsored murder in Europe of some 12 million people, 6 million of whom were Jews, during the Nazi regime; and the Stalinist purge of some 20 million people undertaken in the USSR state during the regime headed by Josef Stalin. In the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001, in which an apparently stateless military attack accomplished a spectacle of mass murder and raised questions about how such an event could have happened, it may be instructive to consider that in the 20th century there were numerous examples of state-sponsored mass murder. The two most notorious--certainly the two that appear to have achieved the highest body count in the 20th century--can be found in Germany's Third Reich (1932-1945) and in the Stalinist perio

Paper Abstract:
Discusses how the Nazis kept the Germans loyal. Germany's economic problems following WWI, and a bankrupt Germany. How Hitler revitalized the German economy. Providing work for the unemployed. Use of propaganda that blamed the Jews and Communists for Germany's problems. Initiation of health and pension programs to ensure loyalty. Hitler Youth.

Paper Introduction:
HOW THE NAZIS KEPT THE GERMANS LOYAL Money talks; and a bankrupt Germany looked for any and all reasons to get out from under the severe penalties that the Treaty of Versailles imposed on it. It was the early financing by German industrialists, most of whom were not merely angry at the terms of the 1919 Versailles Treaty, but saw their nation sink into severe Depression and high inflation, who backed Hitler from the very outset. Some of the ‘influential industrial magnates’ were…Emil Kirdorf, the union-hating coal baron who presided over Treasury’. . . Impact of the return of ethnic Germans from East Europe, and increase of migrant workers. German attitudes toward foreigners. Position of political parties. Issues of multiple nationality, dual citizenship, naturalization. Asylum policy. New laws of 1998.

Paper Introduction:
German Citizenship Laws Introduction The purpose of this report is to examine the evolution of Germany’s citizenship laws. It has been argued that the models of German citizenship are dynamic and still evolving (Hagedorn, 2000). This report will trace the origins of German citizenship in the context of an explosion of migrant workers and new government policy on citizenship and migrants. Historical Overview of Citizenship Laws The Origins of German Citizenship William Barbieri (1998) has stated that it was only in 1871 that Germany was unified for the first time, but even then its territorial identity remained vulnerable to frequent and substantial change. This situation was finally resolved on October 3, 1990 with

Failure of the German elite to support the new government. Political strife.

Paper Introduction:
WEIMAR REPUBLIC The Handicaps Germany’s Weimar Republic was beset by troubles from the start. Born of the nation’s humiliating defeat in World War I, it emerged from the chaos of bloody street battles and divisive strikes that all but engulfed German society in the war’s wake. The so-called elites that had held prewar Germany together never supported the Weimar government, massive war debts fueled runaway inflation that shattered Weimar credibility, harsh terms of the Versailles Treaty burdened the country with huge reparations and occupation troops, and divisions within Germany itself fueled almost continual unrest. Indeed, “the frustrations, resentments, and disunity generated by … [the] wartime collapse [of Imperial Germany] became the hallmarks of political discourse in th

Paper Abstract:
Discusses changes in the two countries during the post-war years of 1945-1950. Rebuilding. Division of Germany into West and East. Economic and financial assistance. The Cold War. Aim of Britain to restore the status quo of central Europe. New Labour government in Britain. Nationalization and the welfare state.

Paper Introduction:
BRITAIN AND GERMANY- 1945- 1950 “To the victor goes the spoils,” says the ancient cliché. The fact that this was said at the treaty of Versailles which ended World War I, and which spawned Hitler and the Nazi Party, made the victorious Allies determined not to make the same political and economic mistake twice in a lifetime. West Germany was now under the strict control and foresight of Konrad Adenauer, while Britain (no longer Great) had shunted aside its wartime leader, Winston Churchill, in favor of a Labour government that gave new meaning to the word “ineptitude”. What happened? And how, and why? Perhaps a hint of what was in store for the next several years was “a graffito (which) appeared on a Berlin wall on March, 1945: ‘Enjoy the war- the peace is going to be terrible!’” (Bark 1989 5). While there

Paper Abstract:
Contends that Hitler's continued relationship with Franco was beneficial to Nazi Germany objectives. Discusses the relationship as based on a mutual desire for political power, financial prosperity and land acquisition. Hitler's role in the Spanish Civil War. Franco & "neutral" Spain aiding Hitler in World War II. Quest for power of both men.

Paper Introduction:
Adolph Hitler and General Francisco Franco were very much alike, according to author Gabrielle Ashford Hodges, in that their “access to unprecedented military, civil, and legal power enables them to impose the tyranny of play-ground politics upon entire nations” (52). The relationship between Hitler and Franco appears to have been largely based on a mutual desire for political power, financial prosperity, and the acquisition of strategically placed lands. Often nations who are torn as to which side to support in times of war will side with the enemies of their enemies (Tyree A17). Hitler helped Franco and his right-wing forces defeat Spain’s Popular Front army to win the Spanish civil war in April 1939, and Franco unofficially helped Nazi Germany during World War II (Bowen). Hitler had created

Paper Abstract:
Sea power in World War I and World War II. Germany as primarily a land power. Compares with British dependency on its fleet. German U-boats; commerce raiding and warfare. Development of German pocket battleships and heavy cruisers. Errors on Hitler's part re: German naval power. Lack of concern for sea power. His strategic mistakes.

Paper Introduction:
STYMIED BY THE SEA Hitler and the German Navy in World War II In order to understand the German naval problem of World War II, it is useful to briefly examine the naval experience of World War I from the German perspective. Before that war, Germany had built a powerful fleet of battleships, the Hochseeflotte or High Seas Fleet. It was described as a "risk fleet." The strategic concept behind it was that Germany, primarily a land power, could ultimately take risks with its battlefleet that maritime dependent Britain could not. In principle, Germany could lose the fleet and still win the war. In contrast, a major loss of the Royal Navy would force Britain to sue for peace. In a war, moreover, Britain was certain to blockade German ports, as it had blockaded France's ports in the Napoleonic Wars. The British fleet woul

Paper Abstract:
Examines Germany's military strategy in early World War II. Great Britain as German's single enemy of the time (1940-June 1941). Consequences of Hitler's obsession with Russia. Germany not engaging in a peripheral campaign against Britain's overseas interests. Italy and the Mediterranean sector; possibility of Italian defeat. Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia.

Paper Introduction:
From May of 1940 until June of 1941, Germany was at war against a single enemy, Great Britain. The most basic principles of strategy thus argued that Germany should devote its resources as far as possible toward defeating that enemy. The most obvious means, invasion, which had so decisively solved the problem of France, was rendered problematical by the insular status of Britain. Economic war against its lifeline, by U-boats or strategic bombing, was a second means. This option was however somewhat one-dimensional, and did not provide a useful task for Germany's great land power. A third option, however, was a peripheral campaign against Britain's overseas interests [Van Crevald 28]. Many of these were out of reach, but a crucial component of

Paper Abstract:
Examines the German economy from 1919-1939. Post World War I German economy. Continuation of wartime inflationary trend. Economic revival in later 1920s. Impact of the 1929 American stock market crash; resulting economic decline. Economic crisis in Germany. The 1932 election of Hitler and rise of Nazism; policy of economic recovery and rearmament.

Paper Introduction:
INFLATION AND NAZISM The German Economy, 1919-1939 World War I was essentially a contest of mutual exhaustion: moral, human, and economic. France had been come close to the breaking point in 1917, and Russia had been driven past it, leading to the Russian Revolution and Russia's withdrawal from the war. In 1918, however, Germany reached the end of its resources, while the Allies were revitalized by the influx of American manpower and resources. In November 1918, Germany had not been invaded, and only a few scattered bombs had fallen on its cities. The German army was still able to launch offensives in mid-1918, and even at that point Germany had a credible chance

Ideological goal of Hitler and Mussolini. Concept that foreign conquest and war played in Nazi German and Fascist Italian foreign policy. Hitler's use of propaganda and ideology to shape German political events. Power of the Hitler myth. Mussolini's doctrine of fascism; concept of nationalism. Fascist aggression.

Paper Introduction:
Historian MacGregor Knox is noted for his comparative studies of fascist dictatorships, notably Italian Fascism and German Nazism. In several works, including Common Destiny: Dictatorship, Foreign Policy, and War in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, and Hitler's Italian Allies: Royal Armed Forced, Fascist Regime, and the War of 1940-43, Knox contends that fascism attempted to create an all-embracing system of belief in which the military was viewed as an ideologically driven force. His major argument is that both Hitler and Mussolini shared the ideological goal of transforming their citizens into "fighting creatures" and that "War" was an essential tool to achieve this objective. This paper will address the role that the concept of "foreign conquest" and "war" played in Nazi German and Fascist Itali

Paper Abstract:
Analysis of systematic murder of European Jews. "Intentionist" & "functionalist" explanations. Role of Nazi Party propoganda, European anti-Semitism.

Paper Introduction:
The "Final Solution," or systematic murder of the European Jews, fit Adolf Hitler's ideology from the very beginning of his career, but it was not part of his plan for the Third Reich until circumstances made it possible. For more than two decades historians have debated the "intentionalist" and "functionalist" explanations of the Final Solution. Intentionalists hold that the direction of the Reich was primarily guided by Hitler's decisions which were "calculated or 'intended' to realize the goals of an ideologically derived 'program'" that he had followed since the 1920s. In this view, the death camps were the long-awaited culmination of Hitler's program. Functionalists, on the other hand, argue that the Final Solution was not part of a comprehensive plan, "rather, the Holocaust resulted from the failure or unfeasibility of increasingly radical plans to [expel]

Paper Abstract:
Impact of Hitler's decision to invade & dominate Slavic Russia. June 1941 invasion of Soviet Unioin as a blunder based on racist ideological position.

Paper Introduction:
The German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 has often been described as "the greatest blunder of the Second World War" and historians have long debated the relative contributions of ideology and strategy to Hitler's decision to implement Operation Barbarossa, as the invasion was known, at this particular time (Rich 204). Although the notion of lebensraum, the acquisition of 'living room' for the expansion of the Aryan peoples, had long been a major factor in Hitler's plans for the Eastern front his planning had also included a commitment to avoid involving Germany in a two-front war. Despite the inevitability of fighting on two fronts because of the unexpected continuing strength of Britain and the United States' entry into the war, however, Hitler believed that Barbarossa was necessary in practical terms. While he certainly held that it was necessary

Paper Introduction:
GERMAN INDUSTRY AND THE HOLOCAUST This research paper discusses the role of German industry, its involvement, culpability and accountability, in and for the Holocaust, the systematic extermination or mass genocide of about six of the eleven million Jews in Europe by the government of National Socialist (Nazi) Germany between 1940 and 1945. With very few exceptions, German industry gave its wholehearted support to the Nazi war machine and knowingly and actively participated in the implementation of the Final Solution (Endlosung) of the 'Jewish Question.' It did so for a number of reasons related to the furtherance of corporate interests; and it acted with at best a crippling moral indifference to the suffering and fate of the Jews. Those industries most directly involved were the major manufacturers

Economic & political & social problems following re-unification. Difficulties encountered in transition to a unifed Germany.

Paper Introduction:
EAST GERMANY: WAKING TO A WESTERN WORLD More than ten years after the reunification of Germany, the jolts and jostles of economic and political merger continue to plague the nation. The two Germanies have yet to blend into a one confluent economic entity, and a decade of Western aid and Eastern dependence has cultivated resentment on both sides. Stereotypes classifying the “Wessies” of the West as arrogant moneygrubbers, and the “Ossies” of the East as shiftless freeloaders have persisted through the 90s, intensifying frustrations. Some economists wonder if the East will manage to catch up with the West within the next twenty-five years. In the final analysis, though the old Communist regime did afford the East German citizens perks like job security and cheap housing, the new East Germany is in fact a better place ten years after the

Paper Introduction:
GERMAN FOREIGN POLICY (1933-1936) This research paper traces the evolution of German foreign policy during the first four years after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. In 1933 and 1934 German foreign policy was marked by a series of incremental, opportunistic and relatively low risk moves, which reflected the priority given to Hitler to the consolidation of his internal position and Germany's secret rearmament. They were designed to exploit disunity and weakness among the European powers which might otherwise jeopardize the achievement of Nazi (National Socialist) Germany's long-term expansionist goals. Germany diplomacy was implemented by a combination of traditional and revolutionary methods, which achieved remarkable success, despite a major setback in Austria. In 1935 and 1936 German

Overview & analysis of Germany's educational system. Describes effects of historical events such as World War II, & the re-unification of Germany. Also discusses the current state educational system.

Paper Introduction:
GERMANY The Federal Republic of Germany has carried its educational system over into the newly-unified Germany. The traditional educational system in Germany was developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and codified by the Weimar Republic in the early decades of this century. The Nazis altered the traditional structure to suit their own concepts. Educational reform followed the war, and attempts were made in 1953 to make the educational system more uniform throughout the Länder. More sweeping reforms were instituted in the 1970s. However, each of the Länder (divisions of the country similar to counties) is largely autonomous in education, making it impossible to gain a consensus regarding uniformity for the school system.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Germany increased the size of its consumer population by 12 million with the reunification of the two German entities, East Germany with West Germany. This reunification involved the most economically powerful country in the emerging EC--West Germany--and one of the poorer countries of the former Warsaw Pact--East Germany. It was speculated at the time that this shift would damage Germany's economic strength, and indeed it has placed a strain on it as the people of East Germany have some way to go before catching up with their western counterparts. Still, Germany remains an economic powerhouse and a good market for a number of goods from other regions. The countries of Europe have long dreamed of a Europe without borders, a Europe without trade barriers or barriers to

Paper Introduction:
The Post-Unification German Economy Introduction: The Fall of the Wall The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was the single event that most dramatically underlined the sea change from the Cold War era in Europe to a post-Cold War era. The fall of the Wall was followed almost immediately by the total collapse of the East German state, which until 1989 had appeared to be both the most repressive and the strongest of the Soviet-bloc states in Eastern Europe. With breathtaking suddenness -- in the space of a year-- came the full and formal reunification of the divided Germanies, a process that it had been presumed even in 1989 would take several years at least. In the long run, reunification could only benefit the German economy.

The German Educational System Introduction Like the education systems in many developed countries, the German system is experiencing a number of stresses and a need for reform. Although most European systems are considered far superior to the U.S. system in providing students with a solid basic education, they have their own problems. One of the major ones for Germany is consolidating its education system and integrating the East German and West German models. In addition, its system of vocational education is declining, and providing less than an adequate labor supply for the country's technological needs. Characteristics of

Discusses two theories which attempt to explain the Holocaust. The first is the "internationalist" perspective, which places Hitler's pathologies at the center. The second is the "structuralist" perspective, in which it developed in unplanned stages.

Paper Introduction:
In trying to explain the Holocaust, historian Ian Kershaw states that the central issue is how Nazi hatred of the Jews was translated into the practice of government and what precise role Hitler played in this transformation. In considering this issue, Kershaw refers to a number of theories that have been offered on this question. He talks of historians in both parts of Germany after the war and how they analyzed the question, though he finds that their efforts in both cases were muted by circumstances and by the way the populace at large ignored their efforts. Thus, he states, the major impetus for such research came from outside Germany. One of the approaches he cites is referred to as Hitlerist, and this view places Hitler at the center of the matter and sees him as having a primary aim which he pursued from an early date, with

Argues that Hitler's rise to power, & control of Germany by the Nazi Party, was not without opposition. States that even after ascension of Nazi Party, opposition continued from inside & outside the government.

Paper Introduction:
The Nazis did not come to power in Germany without opposition, and they did not develop their war machine in an atmosphere completely without resistance. There was resistance to the Nazis within German society from a number of people and groups in society, and this resistance was dealt with harshly as the Nazis tried to consolidate their own power and bring everyone into conformity with their program of belligerence toward Germany's neighbors. During the early days of the rise of the National Socialists to power, there were three characteristics of the regime: 1) a commitment to national tradition to make Germans identify with the state and its power; 2) the joining of tradition with the promise of a new order, of an historic breakthrough, and of a national revival and renewal; and 3) terror directed at enemies and at the

Paper Abstract:
Describes the major characteristics of a reunified Germany & its prospects for the future.

Paper Introduction:
The recently reunified German state has reshaped its political system to accommodate the needs of the newly expanded German state. With the dissolution of the Soviet Empire, a number of other changes have come about in the sphere of Europe, and one major change is the advent of a reunited Germany. Germany was a question mark in the development of the European Community even before this because the German economy appears to be so superior to those of the other countries in the EC, ranking with Japan and standing as a nebulous economic threat to the rest of Europe and to the United States in the estimation of some analysts. The reunited Germany has a number of characteristics. The area of the existing Federal Republic of Germany has been expanded by 44 percent, while its population has grown by only 26 perce

Paper Introduction:
NATION BUILDING? The German Influence Upon The National Experience of its Neighbors I. Introduction: The German National Experience It is a peculiarity of history that while the German people have existed with a distinct historical identity since Western civilization began to emerge out of the Dark Ages over a thousand years ago, a unified German nation-state came into being only in the last century. Through most of the preceding centuries, "Germany" had meaning in terms of language and culture, but was politically a pure abstraction, the purely nominal Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation

Paper Abstract:
Examines the politics & philosophy behind the rise of Nazi Germany. Attempts to understand how Nazism galvanized an entire nation, led it into war, & caused it to commit mass murder.

Paper Introduction:
Naziism Introduction Naziism is perhaps most inescapably connected to the concentration camps. It is the political philosophy that led to that end. There is more to it, however, as a political movement that galvanized an entire nation and led it into a major world war. Background Most historians locate the birth of Naziism in the defeat of Germany in World War I. The terms of the settlement for that peace were hard on Germany. What resulted was widespread economic problems, feelings of humiliation and anger, and the desire of Germans to regain their position as one of the more

Demographics, interpersonal communication, crime & violence, sex & nudity.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction Since the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, Germany has undergone significant changes throughout its culture. Divided by the Allies after World War II, the country was reunited in the early 1990s bringing the formerly communist East Germany (German Democratic Republic) into the democratic and capitalist West (Federal Republic of Germany). The reunification has not been without problems: unemployment runs high among those from the former East Germany, for example, and there has been an increase in the number of nationalist demonstrations in recent years. In addition, the country has seen a large influx of refugees from other former communist countries, and Germany's once strong economy has faltered somewhat as the nation tries to assimilate these new residents. Germany was also instrumental in bringing about not only the Europea

Paper Abstract:
Participation by average German & govt., Nazi propaganda, antisemitism, non-Jewish deaths, role of Police, peer pressure, psychology of, religious issues.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine theories of how and why the Holocaust, or the mass murder of the civilian population of Jews (about six million) and non-Jewish civilians targeted for extinction by the Nazi regime (perhaps another six million) could have been perpetrated and supported by ordinary human beings as much as by the official state apparatus of programmatic evil. The plan of the research will be to set forth the explanations offered by Christopher R. Browning in Ordinary Men and Daniel Jonah Goldhagen in Ordinary Men and Hitler's Willing Executioners, respectively, and then to discuss which of the arguments make the most compelling case and whether and to what extent each argument suggests ways of interpreting the human condition and the prospect of future genocides. As both Browning and Goldhagen argue, and as the evidence of the H

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes three wars (1864, 1866, 1870-1871) which resulted in partial unification, focusing on political & military vision & leadership of Otto von Bismarck.

Paper Introduction:
This study will examine the three nineteenth century wars (1864, 1866 and 1870-71) which resulted in the partial unification of Germany. The primary leader behind these wars and German unification was Otto von Bismarck, the creator of what would become the German Empire. Bismarck was the premier of Prussia from 1862 to 1890 and chancellor of Germany from 1871 to 1890. Had there been no Bismarck the history of Germany, Prussia, Austria and all of Europe would have been drastically altered. (The German states included the Rhineland, Westphalia, Bavaria, etc., but especially significant in this study will be the largest entities of Austria and Prussia.) Therefore, the story of the wars of German unification can be fairly said to be the story of Bismarck himself. Even with the indomitable will of Bismarck, however, there was no guarantee

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes historical, political & military causes & effects of surrender of western Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland) by Britain and France to Hitler's Germany in 1938.

Paper Introduction:
In the history of the Second World War, Munich is a name that carries powerful connotations. It was in Munich that Adolf Hitler launched the abortive Beer-Hall Putscht, his abortive first attempt at power. A decade and a half later, in September of 1938, Hitler had been in power for six years, and Munich became the site of even a more powerfully symbolic event. Here, the Western allied powers faced their last potential decision point short of the one which would confront them with the invasion of Poland a year later. Hitler demanded the right to occupy the Sudetenland, a region of western Czechoslovakia that had a largely German-speaking population. The Czechs were prepared to resist, but despite a fairly powerful army they lacked the means to do so entirely alone. The question was whether the Western Allies,
