Paper Abstract:
Historiographical analysis. Two texts used as basis of analysis. Differences between the two based on the era in which they were written. Lefebre's book emphasizing the role of the peasantry in the origins of the Revolution. Aristocratic revolution against the French crown. Cobban's revisionist analysis of social explanations of the Revolution.

Paper Introduction:
Historiographical Analysis: The French Revolution Summary of the Texts Two texts serve as the basis of this analysis: Georges Lefebvre’s (1988) The Coming of the French Revolution and Alfred Cobban’s (1999) The Social Interpretation of the French Revolution. Lefebvre’s (1988) text was written and published 1939 and very much represents the renewed fervor of revolutionary idealism that was present in France at that time a few months before the Second World War began. In contrast, Cobban’s (1999) text was published first in 1964 and served then as a revisionist analysis of many of the social explanations of the origins of the French Revolution. Lefebvre (1988) addresses only the period at the very beginning of France’s great evolution. The text combines some of the e

Paper Abstract:
Discusses economic, political & cultural concerns re: unification. Integral role of France. French multiparty system, economic growth issues. Brief history of the E.C.

Paper Introduction:
FRANCE AND THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY: TRADITIONAL PAST, TRADITIONAL FUTURE The dream of a unified Europe has long held a place in the slumber of European leaders; today, in the wake of the European Union, signs that successful economic consolidation has occurred are showing with increasing frequency, indicating that perhaps in the modern context some age-old dreams may indeed be realized. The burdens of achieving a united Europe have been plentiful throughout the last fifty years, as traditional superstitions and fluctuating economies have threatened the stability of the region and subsequently any hopes for progressive unification. However, the trend today seems to provide hope that many economic, political, and cultural concerns surrou

Discusses French expertise in cooking; historical & cultural aspects of 1st French restaurants in 18 & 19th Centuries. Auguste Escoffier & haute cuisine. Food as a fine art.

Paper Introduction:
THE ORIGINS OF THE RESTAURANT IN 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY FRANCE French expertise in cooking had been the talk of the world, or at least of Europe, for a couple of centuries or more by the time of the French Revolution in 1789. Still, until then, most fancy food, or haute cuisine, had been the preserve of wealthy nobles who could afford to hire private chefs for their palatial estates. The revolution, however, put a crimp in that extravagant lifestyle, if only temporarily, and it necessarily reduced employment opportunities, as well. Chefs began looking elsewhere for their bread and butter (so to speak), and a trend toward restaurant dining that had been slowly surfacing before the revolution emerged full-blown in its wake. In truth, prepared food had been available dating back to the 1300s in shops, roadside stands and town markets. In the late

NAPOLEON AT AUSTERLITZ "The first principle of a generalinchief is to calculate what he must do, to see if he has all the means to surmount the obstacles with which the enemy can oppose him and, when he has made his decision, to do everything to overcome them." Napoleon INTRODUCTION: In the late summer of 1805, the Emperor Napoleon had assembled nearly 200,000 men on the Channel coast for a planned invasion of England, who - together, with Austria, Russia, and several minor powers - had formed the Third Coalition to oppose Napoleon. By early autumn, Austrian troops advanced into Bavaria and northern Italy while a Russian army began marching west. England supported the war effort with minor coastal

Paper Introduction:
Charles de Gaulle: The Accidental European Introduction Charles de Gaulle has a strong claim to be the most important French political figure of the 20th century, and arguably the most important Western European political figure in the second half of that century. Indeed, de Gaulle might reasonably be called the Father of Europe, in its contemporary form, for no one -- not even Konrad Adenauer -- did more to create a sensibility of Europe as an independent force in world affairs, a sensibility that began to emerge well before the end of the Cold War, and which has taken on new force and definition with the end of the East-West division across the center of Europe. The irony of this role is that "Father of Europe" is by no means a rol

Examines event in terms of French anti-semitism & The Third Republic. The arrest, conviction & imprisonment of Captain Alfred Dreyfuss; efforts to clear him.

Paper Introduction:
ANTI-SEMITISM, THE DREYFUS AFFAIR & THE THIRD REPUBLIC This research paper traces the course of the Dreyfus Affair in the French Third Republic between 1894 and 1906 and examines the cardinal role played by anti-Semitism in its origin and development. Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), son of a wealthy Jewish-Alsatian textile millowner, and a member of the French Army's General Staff, was convicted in 1894 and again in 1899 of treason by military courts. He was originally given a life sentence. He was stripped of his rank and officially degraded. He served nearly five years' imprisonment on Devil's Island before he was pardoned by the President of the Republic in 1899. Even though the evidence against Dreyfus was insufficient to warrant his conviction, it took his family and other defenders (Dreyfusards) 12 years before France's highest

Reviews 20th century developments in French art. Discusses turn of the century Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism, the School of Paris, & Surrealism.

Paper Introduction:
FRANCE French artists in this century continued a process started by the Impressionists in the last century by questioning the meaning of art and by trying to extend that meaning into new areas. Art is sometimes concrete in style and form and sometimes abstract, but the concept of "art" itself is an abstraction. Art is a form of personal expression that has meaning only in a social setting. Art communicates, and this means it must consist of an artist to shape the message, the medium in which the message is shaped, and the audience to whom the message is communicated. "Message" here may be only aesthetic principles which become art when they are recognized as such. In each era, the aesthetic principles will differ, with some ideas discarded and others newly accepted. There are

Paper Introduction:
Cultural Traditions of France This essay analyzes some of the cultural traditions of France through a discussion of its philosophy and literature. Philosophy The history of France begins with the Romans, who first entered what is modern day France in the second century BC. There they encountered the Celts, who were a metal-age people from northern and central Europe who had migrated into the area from about 1000 BC. As one author states, "Celtic Gaul was never more than a geographical expression and bequeathed little of substance to the French -- neither language, faith, institutions, nor customs" (Cole, 1989, 7). The Romanization of Gaul began after Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in 52 BC. With Rome came good

FRANCE--HISTORY The French Revolution was one of the major events in history, carrying forth the revolutionary fervor that started with the American Revolution and that would extend into the next century in other countries of Europe. The French Revolution had a colorful cast of characters, and it also saw the emergence, however temporary, of a number of political groups unlike any that had been seen before. Once such group was called the jacobins. The role of the Jacobins during the French Revolution had much to do with the political struggles that took place and shaped the course of the post-revolutionary period. Historians have taken differing views of the role of the Jacobins, of their influence, and of the nature of their actions during and after the Revolution. These di

Overview of nation in context of Amer. business expansion: politics, demographics, labor, tariffs, barriers, laws.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction One of the oldest countries in Europe, France has long been a key trading partner with other nations, particularly those in Western Europe and North America. The nation was once a significant colonial power, but its colonies have largely gained independence. Today, France is seen as one of the more important markets within the EU, and American companies considering expanding operations to France need to evaluate the political, demographic and business environment within France before making the commitment to market there. This research considers these factors in today's environment. Politics France was one of the first European nations to move from a feudal society into a nation-state, and its monarchy lasted for centuries. There was a pop

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes, social, political, economic, class-based, ideological & historical causes, focusing on role of nobility.

Paper Introduction:
There is probably no explanation of the origins of the French Revolution that does not ascribe to the nobility some important role in setting the stage for the Revolution. It is impossible, of course, to assign to any group--nobility, monarchy, bourgeoisie, peasantry, urban commoners, clergy, or philosophers--sole responsibility for creating the conditions that ended in Revolution. In any of the dominant historical explanations, however, the role of the nobility--even when the advocates of the explanations tend to minimize it--remains the strongest element in setting the scene for the Revolution. This is true whether one considers the passive (what it was and how it was perceived) or active (what it did) nature of its influence. A review of some common theories of the origins of the Revolution will demonstrate that the nobility always bore major, and often

Paper Introduction:
ROLE OF VIOLENCE/TERROR IN THE FRENCH REVOLUTION This research paper discusses the role of violence and its more malignant manifestation, organized and systematic terror, during the French Revolution. In the early stages of the Revolution, sporadic acts of violence occurred, sometimes spontaneously, generally in response to specific events. They were used by groups interested in obtaining power and/or in pushing the Revolution to one extreme or the other. Later, the use of terror began to be employed systematically to deal with the enemies, real and imagined, internal and external, of the Revolution, and eventually to silence all organized opposition. Additionally, the creation of extreme fear throughout the country was used by political terrorist groups such as the Jacobins to promote the utopian ideal. Furthermore, other revolutionary goals we

France's Position on Nuclear Testing in the Pacific Introduction: Since its inception in 1992, 178 nations have signed on to the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT). As part of this agreement, the five nuclear weapons states (China, France, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom) pledged to the other 173 participating countries to exercise 'the upmost restraint' in nuclear testing at the Nuclear Non Proliferation conference held in New York. China ran an underground nuclear test at Lop Nor not three days later, and then another that August. Evaluates 18th Cent. Revolution. Causes & effects, politics, military, social aspects, violence, leadership, religion, slavery, economics, importance of when Revolution ended,

Paper Introduction:
The question of the success or failure of the French Revolution depends on a multitude of factors. First, it must be determined when the Revolution ended. Second, one must decide whether to take a long view of the Revolution and consider its greater historical impact, or a short view assessing its impact on the citizens of France living at the time. Finally, one must consider what, if any, were the specific goals of the Revolutionaries. Each of these three issues are somewhat bound up with one another, but this paper will consider them individually in turn in order to draw a conclusion about the meaning of the French Revolution. The question of when the Revolution ended is a disputed one among academics. Some argue that the institution of the Reign of Terror in 1793 marked the end, others date it to the

IMMIGRATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON FRENCH UNEMPLOYMENT Introduction In the late-twentieth century, more than at any time in the past, migration is a global phenomenon. In search of employment, higher wages, educational opportunities for themselves and their children, and escape from persecution and violence, millions of people cross international borders each year. Over one hundred million people now live in a country other than that of their birth, and millions of these immigrants maintain their ethnic identities in their adopted countries. In industrialized societies on average, non-citizens now typically constitute more than five-percent of the population. In his book The Persian Letters, Montesquieu observes his own society through the eyes of his fictional characters, the Persian travelers Usbek and Rica, whose views are expressed in their letters home. In this paper, I will show how Montesquieu makes use of this device to comment on his own society and to develop a satiric view of that society by using the Persians as substitutes, providing a safe distance between himself and his criticisms. This view will be developed by indicating how the Persians serve their creator as conduits through which to filter French society, allowing an insider (Montesquieu) to comment as an outsider (the Persians) and so to bring a fresh perspective on the issues raised. What Montesquieu thinks about life in his era is shown by means of the comments of the Persians in their

Consequently, the monastic austerity, chivalry, and martial prowess of De Molay and the Knights Templar has become legendary. Little is known about De Molay's early life. He was born about 1240 in France. He entered the Order of Knights Templar as a young man and was elected its twenty-second Grand Master about 1295. De Molay inherited the leadership of an Order undergoing a period of change. Paper Abstract:
Formation & evolution of parties & impact on politics, 1962-1988. Leadership, campaigns & elections, issues, ideology, domestic & foreign policy.

Paper Introduction:
The increased presidentialism inherent in the structures of the Fifth Republic has led to increasing polarization of French politics, and no party better exemplifies this trend than the Union pour la démocratie française (UDF). Rather than a party in a traditional sense, the UDF is a coalition of small parties whose principal shared characteristic is membership in the non-Gaullist Right. The party was formed in 1978 around then-president Valery Giscard d'Estaing as a means of generating parliamentary support and a base for reelection independent of the Gaullist majority. From the beginning the UDF coalition lacked a uniform set of principles and goals, and throughout its history it has often been difficult to distinguish its positions from those of the Gaullist Rassemblement pour la république (RPR). Despite some electoral successes the UDF remained the

However, the company manufactures beverages which are not carbonated or cola-based, and these include Minute Maid products of frozen and refrigerated orange juice. The company has a strong market presence in the United States, and this research considers some of the factors which the company would need to take into account if it were to decide to export Minute Maid products to France. The economic and investment climate of the destination country is important to exporters because this climate determines how successful the product will be in the destination country. INTRODUCTION The countries of Europe long dreamed of a Europe without borders, a Europe without trade barriers or barriers to the free flow of goods and people from one country to another. The dream came closer to a reality with the creation of the European Community and specifically with the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty as a step in an ongoing process leading one day to a Europe united in more than trade. This prospect has created fears among some, however, and some of the member states, or their leadership, have seen the developing EC as a challenge to their sense of sovereignty and autonomous rule. At present, the EC as constituted since 1992 is an economic common market, spurred to integration by the perception that only in this way would Europe be able to compete in the future against the growing

Paper Abstract:
Examines threats to French Republic's stability posed by Dreyfuss Affair (1890s), Cartel des Gauches (1920s) & Popular Front (1934).

Paper Introduction:
The French Republic has been threatened most directly in this century by domestic conservative forces. Three major confrontations demonstrating this fact can be identified as the Dreyfus Affair, the Cartel des Gauches in the early 1920s, and the Popular Front in 1934. These three incidents can be seen as evidence that the Republic at the time was radical and was courting a radical political agenda. The Dreyfus affair involved the false accusation, trial, and imprisonment of Alfred Dreyfus for having supposedly revealed certain military secrets to Germany. One of the most troubling aspects of the Dreyfus affair was the possibility that it involved anti-Semitism, for Dreyfus was Jewish. The degree of anti-Semitism involved has been argued for some time. The affair began with an error on the part of a military court when it

Paper Abstract:
18th Cent. French writer's life, career & contribution to historiography & its relationship to literature.

Paper Introduction:
Although Voltaire's utility as a historian has been both praised and maligned, a study of this literary genius is indispensable for the student of world history. Voltaire was one of the most prolific writers of the eighteenth century. He played an important role in elevating the study of the history of society to the same level as that of the natural sciences. Voltaire is often referred to as the father of historiography. Voltaire's eventful life has been termed his greatest masterpiece. He was not only a man of words, he was a man of action as well. As Richter and Ricardo (1980) put it, "Eventually his life [became] more than just the story of one man's search for truth and happiness: it is the story of an entire age's search for enlightenment" (p. 21). Born Francois Marie Arouet in 1694, Voltaire became one of

Paper Introduction:
FRENCH AND GERMAN CONSTITUTIONS This research paper describes and compares the principal provisions and features of the present constitutions of the Fifth Republic of France and the Federal Republic of Germany. There are important similarities and differences between the two constitutions reflecting the historical experiences of each nation with parliamentary democracy. Both constitutions were adopted under crisis conditions and were intended to remedy excesses of previous governments but the nature of those crises and failures were fundamentally different. In each, somewhat different methods were used to achieve a reasonable balance between individual rights, legislative prerogatives and effective executive action. Each constitution contains unique features. In practice both of them have worked out well.

Paper Abstract:
Compares books' portrayals of roles of women in French Revolution.

Paper Introduction:
Blood Sisters: The French Revolution in Women's History, by Marilyn Yalom, presents the views of women who took part in the revolution. What makes the book special is that Yalom lets the women speak for themselves in their own words, from dozens of preserved accounts. Their personal histories record their own role in that revolution. We learn the essential roles of women in the transformation of France at the end of the eighteenth century, and we learn that women were treated unequally by men who led the revolution, despite women's many minor and major contributions. At the same time, most importantly, the accounts and Yalom's interpretations make clear that women were hardly passive victims of male manipulations during the revolution, but took active roles in both advancing it and protesting its injustices.
